The Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) traces its roots to World War II when Papuans and New Guineans served in the Papuan Infantry Battalion (PIB) and the New Guinea Volunteer Rifles (NGVR). These units later formed the Pacific Islands Regiment (PIR) under Australian command.
The PNGDF was officially established in 1973 as Papua New Guinea transitioned toward independence. The force became PNG’s national military when the country achieved independence on 16 September 1975.
The Department of Defence provides civilian oversight, focusing on policy, administration, budgeting, infrastructure management, and international defence relations.
